A culture where seeking is the greatest value

This land which we call as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal has been a major land for spirituality. The mountainous topographical feature has allowed for thousands of Rishis, Rishikas, and Swamis to seek spirituality and master the existential reality. This land was and is a major pilgrimage destination for the world’s two major religions Hinduism and Buddhism. In the legendary scriptures of the Vedic Sanaatan Dharma this land has been referred by many names. This land has been a perfect place for the ancient prophets of this culture to perform austerities in order to gain the knowledge that they attained.

In the local term this land is also known as the Tapobhumi of the Devas which literally means “The Land where the Devas performed their austerities to attain the status of God “. This land is also known as the land of the Shiva, who is revered by many of the Hindus and the non-Hindus of the world. Shiva who is also known by the name Adiyogi or the first yogi is believed to have propounded the knowledge of the Yoga to the seven sages. The fact the people of this land Shiva so much is because, Shaivism is probably the only culture in the world which talks about how a human being can become divine or Shiva himself.

This ancient culture is by far the most liberal form of spirituality in the world. Because the idea of spirituality in this land was never about following any realized being but rather seeking for the realization himself or herself. That’s the reason we like to be called seekers rather than believers. That particular attitude led Siddhartha Gautama a crown prince turning into the Lord Buddha, who in modern days is revered by both theists and atheists throughout the world.

A country where people come to seek peace and harmony, Nepal has been the destination for the people who wish to witness the teachings of the Buddha. As most people are spiritual, here you can see the belief of the unknown as if those unknown are a part of daily life. Here you can see people waking up early and bathing in cold freezing water in order to keep the traditions and beliefs alive. You can find people ringing the bells of the temple every morning. One can easily find monks meditating in the courtyard of the Stupas and Monasteries.

The land has been an important geographical region where great sages and yogis have been meditating. The land has been described as a tantric body in yogic science. This land has been established as a land where everybody is seeking Nirvana. In this culture, the main focus of spirituality has never been always about attaining the ultimate human nature. We have never been taught about any superior being sitting in the heavens and controlling the fate of any individual.

We have been taught rather seek all the answers on our own. But when exposed to the western culture our idea of the divine has been misunderstood. A person worshiping a stone idol might seem quite confusing among monotheism practitioners worldwide. To clear out your confusion we simply don’t praise the stone for being stone instead we praise the creator within the stone.

No matter how many pieces you break the stone into we human beings will never be able to figure out the entirety of the stone. For everything that exists in nature has its own divine beauty, that is why in our culture we have people worshiping all the animate and inanimate objects. This idea of “not knowing” leads any normal human being on the path to seek. That’s the reason great Rishimunis have emerged out of this land with a huge amount of knowledge and teachings. For example Lord Gautama Buddha who is regarded as the Light of Asia.

It is believed that in ancient times there were a lot of people who attained enlightenment through the means of seeking. As the culture went through a series of contact with other cultures, the main idea of seeking has been convoluted with the idea of believing and knowing. It is not only the westerners who are confused by the culture, the descendent of this culture have been confused. It might be because of translation errors that happened during different times in history.

Today the people know this culture as to how it is defined by western scholars. For example, going into the temples was meant to sit there and feel the energy and the reverberation of the monument but sadly people are visiting temples in hope of clearing all the sins they have committed. Nowadays there might not be a huge amount of Yogis in this land but anyone who is inspired t seeks can still choose this land. As this land is also a place of faith for Buddhists and Hindus, there is a huge amount of spiritual seekers visiting this country. Whether you are a seeker or a believer you can experience the effect of this land on your spirituality. If you choose to explore this land for spirituality, you will not get disappointed.
