It is also known as Fagu Purnima in Nepal for this festival falls on the Full Moon of the Falgun Shuklapakshya which is somewhat during the end of March. There are various legends as to how this festival started however the main theme of the legends is a triumph of good over evil. The major reference is the story of Holika, who was killed in order to save a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Putting this mythological reference aside, the main theme of this festival is to symbolize that life itself is an exuberant process.
This particular full moon symbolizes the coming of the spring season, where new life processes begin. People accumulate so many things in their life either it is physical or psychological throughout the year. On this particular day, this festival reminds people to burn up their gatherings which are somehow taking away the exuberance of their life.
