A culture lost in translation

Vedic Sanaatan Dharma or Hinduism

Nepal has been secular country since new constitution was passed after the revolution of the people and the political parties against the Monarch. Before Nepal was the only Hindu country in the whole wide world. As the people tend to follow the footsteps of their ancestors, Nepalese people are no exception. As the people have been practicing Hinduism since the ancient times, the people have faith in their tradition passed down from generations to generations. Actually Hinduism is called “Sanaatan Dharma” which translates religion of the eternity.

According to the 2001 census, 80.62% percent of Nepalese were Hindu, 10.74% were Buddhist, 4.20% Muslim, 3.60% Kirant (an indigenous religion), 0.45% Christian, and 0.4% were classified as other groups such as Bon religion. However, statistics on religious groups are complicated by the ubiquity of dual faith practices, particularly among Hindus and Buddhists.

This geographical region between the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean was the reason the word Hindu came to existence . Actually all the faiths that come under this wide variety practices are not Hindu. This faith system was not ever focused in someone governing with all his divine plan , this Sanatana dharma mainly focused in seeking the ultimate truth. That's the reason a lot of sages have emerged from this region .This practice never focuses on believing in whatever we are taught , rather find out on our own .

As in our family we can follow whatever god we want to follow. Nobody is gonna have any problem with that. As a matter of fact we can even make a God out of any thing rock , mud , tree , sun , elephant or anything . So the genius minds of our ancestor sages have given us tools to make our own god , hence the 3.3 billion gods . Imagine a family with a religious diversity makes up a country with a population who doesn't care about what other persons faith is .After the influence of the western society into this culture , the amount of religious violence in this area becoming more frequent.

Even as a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious country, Nepal has been a perfect example of a religiously tolerant country since ancient times. Nepal is also a secular state and Democratic country according to the constitution of Nepal. The treatment of all religions equally by the state and Freedom of religion is also guaranteed by the Nepali constitution. The major religion of the Nepalese people is Hinduism. The religion itself is a Polytheism, consisting of multiple gods and deities. It is not mandatory for everyone to worship each and every god.

The people follow different sets of Gods according to their ancestry, ethnicity, and culture. But in recent decades this faith system has been misunderstood. The scriptures, stories, and practices have been mishandled. The "Lack of Complete Knowledge " of this faith system has been mistreated. Currently, most people know Sanatan Dharma as Hinduism because western society named it this way. Most people nowadays don't even know that the purpose of going to the temple was not meant to bribe the divine. As ancient temples were made with certain geometrical proportions, were supposed to be visited by the people who wanted to experience the reverberation of the monument . Nowadays people are able to choose whatever they want but cannot remain in peace with one another.

There is a huge misconception among the people not only of the west but among the people of this culture. It is a widely believed misconception that Hinduism has lots of gods and goddesses. But it is just a matter of a misconception about this culture. In this culture, we do not have many gods but we have many ways to God. For a person of a monotheist culture to whom the idea of a supreme being is singular therefore the people who translated this culture into the west have no clue about this culture.

The reality of this culture is the idea of a divine principle which is known as Atman and Brahman this principle is what pushed this culture to have such a variety of deities. The principle which is the base of the Sanatana Dharma is the idea that states that all the physical and nonphysical part of this existence is just a manifestation of the supreme consciousness in many different ways. When our ancient Rishis looked at the world around them and wondered about the reality of the creation they came to a conclusion that whatever has manifested as the creation is being held by a supreme principle which was called Brahman.

They said that in the world we see all the living and non-living things are just an appearance of the supreme principle at the deeper level which holds everything together. This was the real ancient Hinduism which states that the spirit which holds the body of any living being on a deeper level, which is sparkling through the eyes of any living being is the Atman. So basically the Atman and the Brahman are the same which manifests in different forms of reality. The Vedanta explains that the living things are those which don’t want to be pushed about, they are defiance of any natural forces. It is because of the Brahman which appears in any living organism and that force or the principle which holds the body and allows the lump of matter to act the way they act is called Atman or the soul.
